Skating
Roller Derby is all about skating but that doesn’t mean you need to know how to skate before you join the Malice Springs League; in fact many of our members started with little or no skating skill. If you train regularly and get your skates on often you’ll be whizzing around the track in no time. New skaters are always welcome as are people who have already trained with other leagues.
To skate with Malice Springs Roller Derby League you will need to wear safety gear.
The league has some equipment that you can borrow when you’re starting but if you want to skate regularly it’s better to buy your own gear. If you’re not sure about what is best for you ask other skaters (join our forum here) and check out some useful sites on the links page.
The Malice Springs Roller Derby League skates outdoors three times a week at the Alice Springs Youth Centre on Wills Terrace. Each session costs $5 and the first time you skate you will need to join the centre for a $25 membership fee.
You can check out training times and the calendar of other events here.
To play roller derby skaters need to have attained a minimum skill level. Malice Springs Roller Derby League uses a star system to ensure skaters abilities are assessed regularly. Find out what skills are associated with each level here.
- Referees and non-skating officials (NSOs)
If you want to be involved but don’t necessarily want to play there is plenty of scope to join the league as a referee or NSO. Referees can use quad skates or roller blades and also need to attain a minimum skill level to safely officiate a game.
