Getting started

Any previous skating experience will help but even if you’ve never skated before doesn’t mean you can’t learn how. Once you get a pair of skates you’ll be able to practice anytime you want so just remember the more time you spend skating the better you’ll get.

Remember that Roller Derby requires committment if you want to improve and all skaters are encouraged to come to at least 2 sessions a week to get the most out of training and to build that muscle memory and fitness.

It can be quite an investment to set yourself up with all the gear and Malice Springs Roller Derby League does have some gear for people to borrow if they want to try things out first.

Equipment

Besides a pair of quad skates you will need some safety gear to train with Malice Springs Roller Derby League:

  • Helmet
  • Knee pads
  • Elbow pads
  • Wrist guards
  • Mouth guard

All protective gear is available locally in Alice Springs and the league is sponsored by skate store interstate and overseas. Join the forum and head to the topic on Gear to get discount codes from our sponsors interstate and overseas.

Insurance

MSRDL is a member of Skate Australia, this means you can skate for 3 sessions with the league and still be covered by our insurance before you need to become a member. The Fresh Meat category costs $35 and covers you for the calendar year.

Derby Names

Once skaters have passed their white star they get to choose a derby name; there’s plenty of advice on picking a derby name online. It’s a good idea to check out the derby names already in the league on the profiles page. There is an international master roster of derby names where the derby names will be submitted.
